Fatal truck crash, man charged in Berrima

A man has been charged following a fatal track crash near Berrima today, NSW Police say.

Shortly before 4am today, emergency services were alerted to a serious crash in the south bound lanes of The Hume Highway near the Medway Road off ramp.

Officers from The Hume Local Area Command attended and established a crime scene.

Police will allege a north bound B-double truck crossed to the south bound lanes of the highway and collided with a Ford Ranger utility, before coming to rest on an embankment.

A 23-year-old male passenger in the utility was trapped and could not be revived.

A 24-year-old man driving the utility suffered multiple fractures and was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a serious condition.

The driver of the B-double, a 63-year-old man, was taken to Bowral Hospital with minor injuries and for mandatory blood and urine testing.

He was later taken to Bowral Police Station and charged with dangerous driving occasioning death, drive manner dangerous, and negligent driving occasioning death.

The man was refused bail to appear before Goulburn Local Court tomorrow.

Officers from the Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit continue with their inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash.
