The updates would:
- support more targeted and efficient use of Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs)
- align an existing regulation with current record-keeping requirements
- create consistent national examination standards for remote pilots.
More targeted NOTAMs
Some drone (and rocket) operations need CASA approval to use a specific area. Currently, we must publish each area approval in a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) or aeronautical chart.
We propose removing this requirement. We would only require a NOTAM when it provides a safety benefit.
This would reduce unnecessary NOTAMs, make approvals more efficient for operators and help airspace users focus on relevant safety information.
Aligning record-keeping rules
We propose moving an existing regulation about record keeping to fix an inconsistency in the current rules.
This would make the rules clearer without changing any existing record-keeping requirements for operators.
Consistent RePL and BVLOS examinations
Under the proposal, CASA would set and manage knowledge examinations for:
CASA-approved providers would deliver the examinations. RePL training providers would continue training and preparing candidates.
This would ensure candidates are assessed to the same standard wherever they sit the exam. It would also allow us to update exam content as operations and rules change.
