There has been a 17 per cent increase in ferry patronage since the Tasmanian Government introduced free public transport.
New data from the first three months of the significant cost of living initiative has revealed more Tasmanians are choosing to travel by bus and ferry, when compared to the same period in 2025.
Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Kerry Vincent, said public transport would remain free until 30 June 2027.
"Free public transport is delivering real cost of living relief and helping Tasmanians save on the everyday cost of travelling to work, education, appointments and other activities," Minister Vincent said.
"It is fantastic to see more Tasmanians are getting on board and making public transport part of their daily travel.
"Data shows patronage has grown across the services. Derwent Ferries recorded nearly 92,000 passenger journeys since March, an increase of 17 per cent compared with the same period last year.
"Patronage on Metro services in Hobart increased by 28 per cent over the same period, while data from other bus operators including Kinetic, Calow's and Manions' showed growth between 25 and 36.6 per cent.
"These results show Tasmanians value our public transport network and this cost-of-living measure is supporting families every day.
"I thank our bus drivers, ferry crews, operators and frontline staff for continuing to support passengers and the delivery of these essential services.
"The ferries have become an important part of Hobart's public transport network.
"We remain committed to supporting expanded ferry services on the River Derwent, as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future.
"With public transport free until 30 June 2027, now is a great time to plan a journey and give the bus or ferry a go."
Free travel applies to general access services operated by Metro Tasmania, Tassielink, Kinetic, Manions' Coaches, Calows Coaches, Area Connect and Derwent Ferries, as well as government-contracted school bus services that normally charge a fare.
