The Pacific Islands Forum have announced that Fiji and Tuvalu will host the pre-COP climate events later this year. This is ahead of the United Nations climate change conference, COP31, in Türkiye.
Fiji will host the pre-COP meetings, and Tuvalu will host a leaders' event to bring global leaders to the region. This will give them a chance to see how climate change is affecting Small Island Developing States. Palau will also host a special climate event alongside the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting.
Pre-COP meetings help shape the priorities before the UNFCCC's annual Conference of the Parties (COP). They provide a critical forum for world leaders to shape the agenda for COP31.
COP is the world's largest climate conference. It brings the world together to tackle the global challenge of climate change. Australia is working in partnership with Türkiye and the Pacific to deliver COP31 and the Pacific Pre-COP.
Climate change is already having real and immediate impacts across the Pacific. Hosting the pre-COP events will amplify Pacific voices and build support for Pacific-led climate initiatives.
The Australian Government will work with Fiji to deliver a world-class event that drives meaningful outcomes for the region.
