Film, Food And Conversations This R U OK? Day

Council is inviting community members to join a series of free film nights in September to mark R U OK? Day, encouraging people to check in, share stories and strengthen connections.

R U OK? Day is a national reminder to ask, "Are you OK?" and listen with care. You do not need to be an expert, just be present and ready to listen. Whether it's a friend, neighbour or someone new, a simple conversation can make a difference.

To bring our community together, Council is hosting free film nights in Alexandra, Yea and Kinglake, featuring Australian films that celebrate resilience, connection and the spirit of rural life. Each event includes a BBQ and the opportunity to connect over hot drinks and friendly conversation.

Bring the whole family along to Runt, based on the Craig Silvey novel about a girl and her dog saving the family farm. It will be screening at the Yea Shire Hall, 27 High Street, Yea on Thursday 11 September or Alexandra Shire Hall, 55 Grant Street, Alexandra on Friday 12 September. Doors for both screenings will open at 5.00 pm for a 6.00 pm start.

Missed out on our other sessions of Just a Farmer? Come along to our Kinglake screening at the Ellimatta Centre at Kinglake Trust Reserve, 94 Whittlesea-Kinglake Road, Kinglake on Thursday 18 September. Doors for this screening will open at 5.30 pm with the film starting at 6.30 pm. Please be aware this film is rated M and contains themes that may be confronting.

Local community groups, generously donating their time, will prepare the BBQ before each screening, so guests are encouraged to arrive an hour early and enjoy some food and time with neighbours.

Before the film, a local mental health professional will share practical tips for recognising when someone might be struggling, starting a caring conversation and maintaining connection.

After the screening, guests can enjoy a warm drink and a light supper, practise R U OK? conversations and contribute to the Wellbeing Wall by sharing how you care for your mental wellbeing.
