Final day in Sydney for newly restored steam locomotive 3801 ahead of regional NSW return

Transport Heritage NSW

Newly restored steam locomotive 3801 will operate its final day of steam train rides in Sydney today ahead of a bumper program in regional NSW in the coming weeks.

No other steam engine in Australia has captured the imagination of rail enthusiasts and the public as 3801. When first launched in 1943, it instantly changed the image of the NSW Railways with its streamlined art-deco style.

Over 1,500 people have been among the first to ride behind the newly restored steam locomotive at Central Station this weekend after being off the rails for over a decade.

3801 will grace the Sydney Trains network one final time today before making trips to the Southern Highlands, Albury, Wagga Wagga, Junee, the Blue Mountains and towns in western and northern NSW in the coming weeks.

Today's final day of steam train rides depart Central Station at 9.10am, 10.40am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm, with live entertainment for ticket holders along platform 2.
