Final Section of Garden City Cycleway Stage 1 Begins

Construction of Stage 1D of the Garden City Cycleway has commenced on Cooyong Street in Braddon, connecting the rest of Stage 1 with the intersection of Lonsdale Street and Cooyong Street.

Stage 1D is the final section of Stage 1, and once complete, the Cycleway will connect the northern end of Angas Street in Ainslie to the intersection of Lonsdale and Cooyong streets. From here, users can safely cross Cooyong Street and connect to the Bunda Street shared zone.

"It's great to be starting work on the final piece of the puzzle for Stage 1 of the Cycleway," said Minister for City and Government Services, Tara Cheyne.

"Walking, cycling and scooting are at the centre of our plans to make Canberra a liveable and sustainable city.

"The Cycleway provides an important active transport connection to the city and the lake via the inner-city cycle loop on Bunda and Allara streets.

"Joint funding with the Australian Government was announced last year to deliver Stage 2 of the Cycleway.

"Once Stage 2 is complete, the Cycleway will provide a safe cycle route connecting Watson, Downer, Hackett, Dickson and Ainslie.

"This type of active transport infrastructure improves connectivity between schools, local centres and greenspaces, helping to promote walking, riding and scooting and get people out of their cars for short trips.

"Where possible, we have used asphalt paths to provide a smoother ride for cyclists, but some areas need to be concrete to maintain consistent urban design and support tree root management."

The City Renewal Authority is currently progressing the design of upgrades to Cooyong Street. This work will refer to the design work undertaken by the Garden City Cycleway design team.
