In April 2025, Bayside's bushland management team at Citywide successfully carried out two ecological burns at Bay Road Heathland Sanctuary and Long Hollow Heathland.
These carefully planned burns are part of Council's ongoing fire management and ecological restoration strategy, with a goal to rejuvenate 4,000 square metres of heathland each year.
Ecological burns are vital for maintaining biodiversity in our local bushland. Fire helps trigger the germination of native seeds stored in the soil, supporting the natural regeneration of these unique ecosystems. Long Hollow, which hadn't seen fire in over 20 years, was particularly in need of this ecological reset.
Taking advantage of two ideal autumn days with mild temperatures and light winds, the team conducted cool, slow-moving burns minimising harm to existing flora and fauna while encouraging healthy regrowth.
Post-burn, the team is now focused on monitoring plant recovery and managing invasive weeds to ensure long-term success.
These burns are a key part of preserving Bayside's precious heathlands for future generations.
