Firearm and prohibited weapons found; two men charged - Western Region

Two men have been charged after a vehicle stop in the state's west at the weekend.

About 12.15am (Saturday 8 February 2020), officers from Barrier Police District stopped a vehicle travelling on Market Street, Balranald, with two passengers on board.

Officers approached the vehicle and spoke with the 39-year-old male driver who police will allege was unlicensed. Officers will also allege a firearm was found in the boot of the vehicle, along with an amount of ammunition and a baton.

The driver, and his 35-year-old male passenger were arrested and taken to Dareton Police Station.

The driver was charged with possess unauthorised firearm, possess ammunition, unlicensed driver and having custody of a knife. He was also charged with an outstanding warrant.

He was refused bail and will appear in Broken Hill Local Court today (Monday 10 February 2020).

The passenger was charged with possess or use prohibited weapon without a permit and possession of equipment for administering drugs.

He was given conditional bail and will appear in Wentworth Local Court on Tuesday 10 March 2020.
