Firearms And Drugs Seized In Northern Search

A 51-year-old man from Tasmania's north is facing firearms, assault and drugs charges following his arrest on Thursday during a targeted police operation.

Officers from the Northern Drugs and Firearms Unit, Western Drugs and Firearms, detectives from Northern Criminal Investigation Division and specialist resources conducted a search of a rural property east of Launceston on 19 February.

During the search, police allege they found a quantity of cannabis plants, three stolen firearms and quantities of ammunition.

The man was arrested at the property on Thursday and taken safely into custody.

Following further investigations, the man is facing charges including:

• Possess a firearm when not the holder of a firearm licence of the appropriate category

• Aggravated assault

• Common assault

• Possession of stolen firearms

• Possess ammunition when not the holder of the appropriate licence

• Possess firearm in contravention of firearm prohibition order

• Possess firearm part

• Cultivate controlled plant

The man was detained overnight and is scheduled to appear in the Launceston Magistrates Court this afternoon.
