Firearms Law Reform Eases Red Tape for Territorians

NT Government

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is delivering on a key election commitment to restore the Territory lifestyle, with the introduction of sensible amendments to the Firearms Act that slashes red tape for responsible firearm owners while maintaining strong safeguards to protect the community.

The reforms remove the mandatory 28-day waiting period for existing Category A and B licence holders purchasing another firearm of the same category, provided all safety and background checks have been completed.

The amendments also retain the Commissioner of Police's discretion to place limits or refuse permits where appropriate, ensuring continued oversight and flexibility within the system.

This follows a policy change allowing interstate licence holders to purchase ammunition in the Northern Territory, which is another practical measure that supports local businesses and visiting shooters while maintaining strict safety standards.

Deputy Chief Minister Gerard Maley said the amendments strike the right balance between public safety and fairness for responsible firearm owners.

"These are practical, commonsense reforms that respect responsible firearm owners while ensuring the Territory's strong regulatory framework remains in place," said Minister Maley.

"If you already hold a licence, have been through all the necessary checks, and are buying another firearm of the same category, you shouldn't have to start from scratch and wait another 28 days."

"This change removes duplication, supports local firearm retailers, and gives Territorians the respect and trust they deserve."

The reform will end unnecessary delays that have frustrated both licence holders and small businesses, with firearm retailers often forced to hold significant amounts of stock while approvals were pending.

"Our government backs responsible firearm owners: Territorians who do the right thing, follow the rules, and contribute to their communities and our economy," Mr Maley said.

"We've listened, we've acted, and we're delivering a fairer system that supports our regional businesses and removes red tape that simply made no sense."

"This is about balance, maintaining strong regulation while removing unnecessary bureaucracy," said Mr Maley.
