The NSW Police Force Firearms Registry is working with local communities to ensure registered firearm holders are complying with all requirements that come with safe gun ownership and compliance across NSW.
Operation Exert commenced in September 2020 and is part of a state-wide initiative aims to provide a safer NSW through effective firearms industry regulation, and, the prevention, disruption and response to firearms-related crime.
Further, it provides additional education and training in the conduct of firearms safe storage inspections and audits for all NSW Police Commands and Districts.
NSW Firearms Registry Commander, Detective Superintendent Cameron Lindsay, said the operation is a collaboration between the Registry, local police and firearms communities.
"Operation Exert focuses on safe storage inspections, and full auditing of firearms dealers, clubs and ranges across the state, Supt Lindsay said.
"It's also an opportunity for police to provide further education to the firearms industry and firearms licence holders to ensure understanding and compliance with their legislative responsibilities," Supt Lindsay said.
"The goal of Operation Exert is to increase the capability and capacity of local police districts and area commands by increasing their engagement with firearm ranges, clubs and dealers," Supt Lindsay said.
The NSW Firearms Registry was in the Brisbane Waters and Tuggerah Lakes Police Districts between Monday 7 June 2021 and today (Friday 11 June 2021), in support of Operation Exert.
During that time, seven licensed firearms dealer audits and safe storage inspections were conducted, which included the audit of more than 350 firearms. Minor record keeping and safe storage issues were identified during the inspections, which will undergo further review.
The Registry will continue to support the two districts, and work with licence holders, to resolve these matters. Further local Firearms Range and Club audits are planned for later in the year.
"I am pleased with the Operation Exert results across Brisbane Waters and Tuggerah Lakes Police Districts – it demonstrates that individual gun owners and associated firearms businesses take their responsibilities seriously, in what is a highly regulated industry.
"The operation also gives those individuals and business owners an opportunity to voice any concerns they might have when it comes to firearms legislation."
