Firm Fined for Importing Unlicensed Greenhouse Gear

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

A company has received an $18,780 infringement under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Act 1989.

The notice was issued for the import of equipment containing a gas known as R410a without a licence.

R410a is a refrigerant often used in air conditioners and other cooling systems. It is a type of synthetic greenhouse gas and can stay in the atmosphere for a long time. If it escapes, R410a and other greenhouse gases contribute to climate change.

We regulate the import and handling of these types of substances. This reduces the risk of them being released into the atmosphere. We also manage reporting obligations for licence holders importing regulated substances.

In Australia, you may need a licence to import equipment that contains scheduled substances. The company did not have a licence to bring this kind of equipment into the country.

We work closely with the Australian Border Force to check what comes into the country. These checks help protect the environment and make sure businesses and individuals are following the law.
