The City of Launceston has begun repair works on a section of the First Basin Track damaged by a bushfire in the Cataract Gorge Reserve earlier this year.
Approximately 200m of the track between the Alexandra Suspension Bridge and the Sentinel Lookout was impacted by the fire, which resulted in damage to bridges, elevated walkways, fences and bluestone retaining walls.
Fallen trees, landslips and rockfalls also occurred.
In recent months the Council has been working to undertake engineering assessments of the damaged track infrastructure and to coordinate repair or replacement works.
This week work has started to stabilise loose rocks and remove fallen trees from the track.
Following this stabilisation work, repairs will be undertaken to damaged bridges, handrails and the track surface itself.
City of Launceston Mayor Matthew Garwood said the First Basin Track is on track to reopen by November.
"The First Basin Track is one of the most stunning and challenging walks we've got in the Gorge," Mayor Garwood said.
"Because of its location, the track relies on a heap of bridges, elevated walkways and fencing, and unfortunately, a lot of that was damaged in the bushfire earlier this year.
"We've been working hand-in-hand with engineering crews to make sure when we do reopen, it's done safely and properly, so people can get back to enjoying that incredible link between the First Basin and Duck Reach.
"Now that all the behind-the-scenes planning and prep work is sorted, it's awesome to see repairs finally underway.
"A huge thanks to everyone for being patient while we get this done and just a quick reminder to stick to the signage and stay clear of any closed areas while the works are happening. It'll be worth the wait."
