The Electoral Amendment (Alternative Voting Procedures) Bill 2025 is in effect, giving Tasmanians living with disability more options to vote at this weekend's Legislative Council election.
This Bill allows the Tasmanian Electoral Commission (TEC) to approve appropriate alternative voting procedures to facilitate voting for electors who are experiencing barriers to accessing traditional voting services, such as voting in person or by post.
Approved procedures may include but are not limited to electronic voting services, such as telephone voting.
Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Guy Barnett, said this was a win for Tasmanian democracy.
"We are lucky to live in our democratic and free society where exercising your right to vote is an integral part of who we are," the Attorney-General said.
"This weekend, Tasmanians living with disability will have greater options to exercise that right after the passage of key legislation by our Government.
"We want Tasmania to be the best it possibly can be under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania's Future and this is a shining example of what good legislation can achieve.
"I want to thank all stakeholders, advocates and members of the public who worked alongside us to make this happen and to encourage every eligible Tasmanian to get out and vote this weekend."
