Fit To Wade In And Reset

Soldiers and sailors competed in HMAS Canberra's Fit Games during a recent transit off the east coast of Queensland.

The games provided the opportunity to maintain physical readiness and strengthen unit cohesion ahead of Exercise Sea Wader.

After seven days at sea conducting training, the event provided a structured break that supported wellbeing and operational focus across the Australian Amphibious Force.

The Fit Games involved a series of controlled physical challenges designed to promote teamwork, resilience, and sustained fitness and key requirements for amphibious operations.

Crew and embarked forces from multiple departments and units took part, demonstrating strong engagement and professionalism throughout the activity.

Physical Training Instructor Leading Seaman Armilym Pontanes said the event played an important role in supporting the force's overall readiness.

"Physical training is an essential component of life at sea, particularly for a platform like HMAS Canberra that supports amphibious operations," she said.

"The Fit Games allowed us to reinforce fitness, morale and teamwork in a structured but enjoyable way.

"It gave personnel a chance to reset while still contributing to readiness outcomes."

Canberra's physical training instructors conduct multiple physical training sessions each day on board, ensuring personnel with diverse operational schedules have access to regular training opportunities.

Leading Seaman Pontanes said the level of participation in the training sessions was an indicator of the integration between the ship's company and the embarked force.

"Everyone comes to our sessions with enthusiasm and a strong sense of camaraderie, which is exactly what we aim to foster," she said.

"Physical conditioning and mental resilience is just the by-product of the collective preparedness we develop during PT sessions."
