Five New Heritage Places Protected Under Ballarat's Heritage Overlay

The City of Ballarat has officially introduced five historically significant heritage places into the Ballarat Planning Scheme Heritage Overlay, reinforcing its commitment to preserving the city's rich cultural heritage.

They include the former St Mark's Anglican Parsonage "The Manse" (now a private residence) in Brown Hill, a residential precinct in Holmes Street Ballarat Central, Mossmont House and Garden in Buninyong, and Victory House in Canadian.

City of Ballarat Mayor, Cr Tracey Hargreaves welcomed the announcement, stating that Ballarat's heritage is a cornerstone of the city's identity.

"By protecting these properties, we honour our past while shaping a future that respects and celebrates our unique character."

The inclusion of these properties directly supports the City of Ballarat's Community Vision 2025-2035, which positions Ballarat as Victoria's heritage city, and calls for the conservation of historic places alongside sustainable urban growth.

It also delivers on the Council Plan 2025-2029, which outlines six strategic goals, including a city that conserves its heritage and enhances our natural, cultural and built assets.

"These heritage protections are more than just planning decisions, they're a reflection of our community's values," Cr Hargreaves said.

"We're safeguarding the stories, architecture and character that make Ballarat unique, while ensuring future generations can continue to connect with our city's past."

Community members are encouraged to explore the Ballarat Heritage Database to learn more about the newly protected sites and the broader heritage overlay framework.
