Flynn's First Season As Seasonal Firefighter

For Flynn Brough, joining Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) as a seasonal firefighter (formerly project firefighter) was a leap into the unknown. 'I didn't really know what to expect,' he admits. But after 9 months on the job during the 2024–2025 fire season, Flynn has discovered a role that's as diverse as it is rewarding.

Flynn said he was eager to learn and find out what being a seasonal firefighter involved. He was also interested in being able to work outdoors and have a role during emergency response.

Each day brings something new. 'One day I might be maintaining bush tracks, the next I'm responding to a bushfire or travelling to another part of the state for fire response or planned burning,' Flynn said. 'There are so many different jobs and tasks that come under the role that I find myself doing something different almost every day.'

The variety of work is matched by the variety of landscapes. Flynn says one of the highlights of the job is spending time outdoors and learning about Victoria's forests and wildlife. 'It's fascinating to see and understand the local forests and its flora and fauna, and it's also been interesting to see the differences in landscapes and forests in other areas of the state while on deployments,' he said.

One standout moment for Flynn was working on the Budj Bim bushfire response. 'Walking through the rocky terrain to set up a hose lay and putting water on hotspots was a real learning experience,' he recalls. 'I also learned how to operate a fire tower and call in smoke sightings.'

Adaptability has been key. With changing conditions and varying hours, Flynn says he's learned to be flexible and ready for anything. 'You're constantly learning and adjusting, which keeps things interesting.'

For those considering applying, Flynn's advice is simple: 'You've got nothing to lose.'

'You gain an incredible amount of experience and skills. It's something everyone should try,' he said.

If you're someone who enjoys working outdoors, wants to learn new skills, and thrives in a team environment, a season as a seasonal firefighter might be the perfect fit.
