Four people have been charged over their alleged involvement in the trafficking of an illicit substance in Melbourne's bayside suburbs.
Detectives from the Prahran Divisional Response Unit executed a search warrant an apartment on Addison Street, Elwood, about 8.30am on Thursday 6 August.
Inside, police located 12 litres of a liquid suspected of being 1,4-Butanediol, similar to GHB. The substance will undergo forensic analysis to confirm that it is 1,4-Butanediol.
Detectives also seized quantities of cocaine, ketamine, methylamphetamine, cannabis and hashish.
Four people were arrested at the property:
- A 41-year-old Elwood man, who was charged with two counts of trafficking a commercial quantity of 1,4-Butanediol, as well as possessing cartridge ammunition. He was remanded to appear in the County Court of Victoria on 13 October.
- A 60-year-old Elwood man, who was charged with possessing ketamine, methylamphetamine, cannabis and hashish.
- A 39-year-ol Elwood woman, who was charged with resist police, and commit indictable offence whilst on bail.
- A 63-year-old Elwood man, who was charged with possessing cocaine.
The trio was bailed to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court in early 2027.
1,4-Butanediol is an industrial solvent used in the manufacturing of plastics but is often used as an alternative to GHB.
The substance can be highly unpredictable as it works slower than GHB and takes longer to be absorbed in the body, with users at greater risk of overdosing because they are more likely to take a second or third dose.
