Four police dogs retire

Recently, Police Dogs (PDs) Marley, Lily, Elly and Georgie have retired from service at our Dog Operations Unit.

PD Elly, a Drug Detection dog, has given seven years of service to SAPOL. In that time, she's had 875 deployments, apprehended 557 suspects and had 593 offences cleared from detections. PD Elly will retire on the same day as her best friend and Handler Brevet Sergeant (BSGT) Tony. Although BSGT Tony was not PD Elly's first handler, she will retire to BSGT Tony's care.

"PD Elly is almost like a cat. She's a real anomaly when it comes to dogs. She's aloof but loving. Really loves her tummy rubs and wants attention… but on her terms. When she wants to be shown some love she'll come and demand it and when she's had enough she'll walk off." -- BSGT Tony.

PD Marley, a General Duties dog has given seven years of service to SAPOL. In that time, she's had 1,179 deployments, apprehended 92 suspects and had 247 offences cleared from detections. PD Marley has been with her Handler, BSGT Tina, for her entire career. It's only fitting that she will also retire to BSGT Tina's care where she'll live a life of luxury.

"The most memorable moment with PD Marley would be apprehending an interstate suspect who was running from a stolen car in the Adelaide Hills. PD Marley tracked for over a kilometre in thick scrub. The suspect was wanted for over 30 offences interstate." – BSGT Tina.

PD Lily, a Fire Arms and Explosives, has given eight years of service to SAPOL. In that time, she's had 523 deployments, apprehended 12 suspects and had 13 offences cleared from detections. PD Lily had a few different handlers throughout her career. One of her former Handler's, Sergeant (SGT) Matthew, is who she'll retire to the care of. PD Lily's Handler up until her retirement was BSGT Scott who describes PD Lily as being very affectionate and a big fan of belly rubs. PD Lily will now pursue her favourite hobby, swimming at the beach or pool.

"Lily maintained her work ethic and enthusiasm from the start all the way through her career until she was retired. She did some of her best work as a Firearms and Explosives detection dog clearing hotel rooms prior to dignitaries attending in Adelaide!" – BSGT Scott.

PD Georgie, a Drug Detection dog, has given seven years of service to SAPOL. In that time, she's had 1,008 deployments, apprehended 806 suspects and had 1,085 offences cleared from detections. PD Georgie had been with her handler, BSGT Bryan, for her entire career. She has retired to the care of BSGT Bryan's brother at his farm in the Mid-North. PD Georgie is now busy running and rolling around the paddock.

"PD Georgie is such an intense, highly driven dog to work with. She had an enormous enthusiasm to work. Every job was exciting to her. She just never stopped working hard right up to the day she retired. And now she enjoys herself as a retired farm dog at a family property." – BSGT Bryan.

We are so proud of PD Marley, PD Lily, PD Georgie and PD Elly—and we know that PD Amber, PD Chaos, PD Xera and one more newcomer will fill their paw prints well.
