Fraud And Counterfeit Money Charges At Hervey Bay

Police have arrested a 27-year-old man following an investigation into fraudulent activity involving counterfeit money in Hervey Bay.

On 2 September it is alleged the man used a counterfeit 50 dollar note to purchase alcohol from a hotel in Scarness.

It is alleged the man then returned to the same hotel on 3 September and again used a counterfeit 50 dollar note to purchase goods.

On 4 September, the man visited a hotel in Craignish where it is alleged, he used counterfeit 50-dollar notes to purchase cigarettes and play gaming machines.

Officers from Hervey Bay's Criminal Investigation Branch executed a search warrant at a Pulgul Street property in Urangan on 10 September where they allegedly discovered $8860 worth of counterfeit notes in 20, 50 and 100 dollar bills, along with an amount of cannabis and methylamphetamine.

A 27-year-old Kuwungan man has been charged with two counts of fraud and one count each of possessing counterfeit money and possessing dangerous drugs.

He is due to appear in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on 2 October.

Detectives are urging business owners in the area to check 20, 50 and 100 dollar bills, and report any suspicious monetary notes to police.

Investigations remain ongoing.
