Each year Lake Macquarie residents save approximately 80 tonnes of household problem waste from going to landfill by dropping off waste such as poisons, pesticides, paints, batteries and gas bottles at the bi-annual Chemical CleanOut.
It is that time of year again. Residents of Lake Macquarie and the Hunter are encouraged to clear their homes of unwanted chemicals at the next Chemical CleanOut, to be held at Belmont TAFE carpark, Gen Street, Belmont on Saturday 29 May from 9am. The event is open until 3.30pm, so avoid the morning rush and come later in the afternoon.
Household quantities of items such as motor oils, paint, poisons and batteries can be disposed free of charge. Accepted quantities are limited to a maximum of 20kg by weight and by size 20L for a single item and for paint up to 100L (maximum size of 20L containers).
Lake Macquarie City Council's Manager Waste Services Paul Collins says that the Chemical CleanOut is an opportunity for residents to dispose of possibly hazardous materials safely to protect our environment and at no cost.
"It is extremely important we don't fill up our landfill sites or tip any unwanted chemicals down the drain that may poison our waterways and beautiful Lake Macquarie".
"Many of the chemicals collected on the day can be recycled, while the rest is disposed of safely," said Mr Collins.
The household Chemical CleanOut is a drive-through service run with the NSW Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) and is open to all Hunter residents. For safety reasons, no walk-ins will be permitted.
To ensure materials are transported safely, it is recommended that containers filled with liquids are wrapped in newspaper and a plastic bag and then placed inside a bucket or tray away from other passengers.
Do not mix chemicals and if possible leave in original containers. All containers must be labelled and well sealed.
We remain committed to the safety of our community and team members, so a COVID safe plan is in operation. Visitors will be required to follow instructions and remain in their vehicles at all times while the operators remove the items from car boots, trays or trailers.
