Free degrees to increase school counsellor numbers

School counsellors provide important psychological assessment, intervention and support services in NSW Schools. There are currently 1044 school counselling positions, with a $6.2 million investment in the new scholarship program to create 55 more. The scholarships are part of the Supported Students, Successful Students program. Successful applicants will be granted:

  • full funding for a Master of Professional Psychology (School Psychology) at the University of Wollongong
  • $1500 for textbooks
  • supervised internship and ongoing employment as a school psychologist
  • a bonus payment of up to $6000 upon starting the job.

With a guarantee of full-time employment in a NSW government school, Education Minister Rob Stokes encouraged psychology graduates to apply for the scholarships.

"The path to adulthood can be difficult. This is why we need to recruit the best psychologists working in our schools to guide and support our students," Mr Stokes said.

"This is a golden opportunity for any young psychologist who wants to have a real impact helping lives, while also enjoying a rewarding career."
