The City of Fremantle has won an award for the inaugural 'Freo Pride Fest' - an all-ages festival of celebration and connection for the LGBTQIA+ community, their families, friends and the wider community.
The festival was first held in 2024 and attracts around 7,000 people to Walyalup Koort and Fremantle Library for the free one-day event.
The City took out the Connecting Communities Award at the LG Professionals WA 2025 Honour Awards last week.
Youth Officer Annie Gevers, who leads the event's organisation, said her work is purpose-driven.
"It's vital for young people and the wider community to know that it's okay to be whoever you want to be, at any stage of your life, and that our city is a safe and inclusive place for LGBTQIA+SB people to live, work, and visit," she said.
'Freo Pride Fest' is a family-friendly, inclusive event that features live music, community stalls, workshops and other activities that enable the community to connect and inspire.
The festival concept was initiated by a group of young people involved in the City's Changemaker mentorship program, who saw a need. The City's community development team led on the planning and delivery of the event, in liaison with event partner headspace Fremantle.
"Currently, there is a lack of LGBTQIA+SB services south of the river. By bringing these services to our city, we're helping ensure that our community can access programs and initiatives that enhance health, wellbeing, and social connection," Annie said.
The festival is all about increasing visibility and acceptance of the LGBTQIA+ community.
"Developing programs and initiatives that connect people and foster belonging is always a worthwhile investment of our time. Everyone deserves a place where they feel safe, loved, and valued within their community."
The LG Professionals WA Honour Awards aim to acknowledge, award, and celebrate passionate Local Government Officers who demonstrate an outstanding contribution to the Local Government industry.
The Connecting Communities Award, one of eight award categories, recognises local governments that are taking proactive approaches to developing vibrant connected communities.
The City of Fremantle hopes to grow 'Freo Pride Fest' each year.
