Friday Return For Hibbard Ferry Service

Port Macquarie-Hastings

Port Macquarie Hastings Council is pleased to advise that the Hibbard Ferry will return to service on Friday morning, following an extended period of maintenance to repair damage sustained during the May weather event.

Mayor Adam Roberts said the ferry's reinstatement tomorrow at 6am signalled an important step forward in the recovery process for North Shore residents, businesses and commuters impacted by the May weather event.

"The Hibbard Ferry's return to service is a critical step forward for our community in the ongoing recovery process," he said.

"The May weather event presented some significant challenges for our community, including those on the North Shore who were temporality isolated, before being inconvenienced by the loss of the Hibbard Ferry for the past eight weeks.

"I'd like to thank them for their patience shown during the extended maintenance period, as well as the Council staff and contractors who have been integral in the repair of this critical vessel."

The Hibbard Ferry was due to undergo scheduled maintenance in May before it was severely impacted by damage sustained when its cables snapped during the May flood.

Inspections of the vessel identified significant structural damage, requiring repairs not covered in the normal maintenance program. As a result, the Hibbard Ferry received newly installed ramps, brakes and gates, the application of new non‑skid surfaces and electrical upgrades.

It underwent rigorous on-water testing this week in line with Australian Maritime Safety Authority compliance standards, before being given the green light operate on Friday.

As a result of its return to service, the regular shuttle service provided during the maintenance and repair period will now end.

Mayor Roberts said the ferry's reinstatement demonstrates steady progress in restoring key services impacted by the May weather event.

"The ferry's return now gives local businesses, primary producers and recovery service providers confidence that they can move their goods and equipment with greater confidence," he said.
