From Plate To Bay: Turning Waste Into Habitat

Discarded oyster shells are getting a second life on the Mornington Peninsula - and our bay is better for it.

The Shell Savers project, a collaboration between OzFish and Mornington Peninsula Shire, is diverting oyster shells away from landfill. The shells are collected from restaurants, cleaned and brought back into our bay to build new shellfish reefs in Port Phillip. These reefs support marine life by building ecological assets and biodiversity.

The community-led initiative is part of OzFish's national Shellfish Revolution Program, and the hard work hasn't gone unnoticed. Shell Savers recently took home the Circular Economy award at the 2026 Keep Australia Beautiful Tidy Towns Awards.

This eco-friendly project is proof that sometimes, the smallest things can have a big impact!
