Taiwan is an island that constantly reinvents itself. Earlier this spring, we presented three books highlighting the island's diversity. During this symposium, authors, translators, and publishers will engage in conversation with readers about Taiwanese history and culture.
On Friday 9 October, Leiden University Libraries (UBL), in collaboration with the National Museum of Taiwan Literature, will organise a symposium centered on the trilogy Taiwan: Island of Diversity. The three books were presented at the University Library earlier this year.
You can attend the symposium in the Kartini Auditorium at the University Library from 15:00 to 17:00. Admission is free, but registration is mandatory.
Program
During the symposium, Taiwanese authors Ma Yi-Hang and Professor Wu Tsong-min, who contributed to the publications, will be present. Together with the publisher, translators, and the audience, they will discuss Taiwan's history, literature, food culture, ethnic diversity, and contemporary society. The symposium will be moderated by Wang Wei-Jyh, Editor-in-Chief at Azure Publishing House in Taiwan, with interpreting provided by Annelous Stiggelbout.
Diversity
The three books tell the story of a diverse society that continuously reinvents itself. They recount the lives of the island's indigenous peoples, the various Austronesian groups. They delve into history, economics, and contemporary society, while also showcasing Taiwan's rich culinary tradition and food culture.
