Fun-filled activities for Macleay's Youth Week celebrations

A colour fun run, mural painting workshop and film festival are among the fun-filled events being held as part of this year's local Youth Week celebrations.

Kempsey Shire Council is sponsoring a variety of events for Youth Week from 10-18 April targeted at young people aged 12-25 under the theme 'Coming together to Connect, Share, Speak Out and Celebrate'.

A feature event is the annual Dash with a Splash (& Twist) - a colour fun run where participants can walk, jog or run a 2km course which includes obstacles.

Organised by Kempsey Healing Together Events Committee, the event will be held on Friday, 12 April at 10am at the Eden Street playing fields in Kempsey.

Around 800 children are registered to participate in the popular fun run with older participants eligible to enter a draw to win a tandem skydive donated by Coffs Skydivers.

Indo the Artist is also hosting a free mural painting workshop on Saturday, April 13 at the Crescent Head Skatepark from 10am to 1:30pm. The workshop is funded through Regional Arts NSW's Country Arts Support Program and Council.

Council is also partnering with Kempsey Community Suicide Prevention to fund and present the NextWave Youth Film Festival from 5:30pm to 9:00pm on Saturday, 13 April at Riverside Park, Kempsey.

Bring a chair and picnic blanket along to view the screening of NextWave's youth short film project winners, enjoy food stalls, music, and other activities including fire twirling, face painting and jumping castle.

The short film screening launches a community project funded by Council where youth can create their own videos to raise awareness of issues that matter to them. Organised by the Kempsey Community Suicide Prevention committee, the film-making workshops will be held in coming months.

Council's Communications and Community Coordinator, Maya Spannari, said Youth Week was a chance to celebrate the contribution of youth to our local community.

"Youth Week is about recognising and showing support for our Shire's young people while giving them the opportunity to be involved in a variety of fun events and activities," she said.
