The spirit of community has been felt across the City of Swan and Western Australia as hundreds of people and organisations generously donate to the Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund to support those affected by the Wooroloo and Hills bushfire.
The City of Swan will support the City of Perth to administer the fund applications to fire-affected residents and property owners within the municipality from today. The Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund currently stands at $7.2 million.
City of Swan Mayor Kevin Bailey said the donated funds would make a significant and immediate difference to those people and families who had suddenly lost everything.
“I’d like to thank the City of Perth and the Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas for launching the appeal, and the people and organisations who have generously donated,” he said.
“The shocking images and stories of devastation and damage that we saw on the news and social media were clearly felt by people far and wide, and the community really appreciates the heart-felt support.”
With many locals facing a long and difficult road ahead of them, including clean-up from the fire, recovery and rebuilding, Mayor Bailey said he encouraged everyone to dig deep and donate if they could.
The Lord Mayor’s Distress Relief Fund is Western Australia’s official State emergency fund. The fund provides relief for personal hardship and distress arising from natural disasters occurring in Western Australia.
