Goulburn Mulwaree Council has secured funding to undertake detailed leak detection work across the Goulburn and Marulan water supply system.

It is thanks to the Active Leak Detection Project that is part of the NSW Government's $35.3 million Water Efficiency and Regional Leakage Reduction Program.

The project, delivered at no cost to Council, uses cutting-edge equipment including noise loggers, electronic listening sticks, ground microphones and leak noise correlators to detect leaks hidden within the network so they can be repaired.

Acting Chief Executive Officer Marina Hollands said the funding supports council's long-term water sustainability goals.

"This is an important step in improving the efficiency of our water infrastructure. By identifying and repairing leaks early, we can conserve water, reduce long-term costs, and better serve our communities." Mrs Hollands Continued.

NSW DCCEEW Executive Director of Operations Resilience, Ashraf El-Sherbini said the project has already achieved some impressive results.

"During 2022-2024, our Active Leak Detection project clocked up a staggering 7,500 megalitres (ML) per year in water savings in over 60 regional locations.

"You'd be amazed at how much town water is lost every year across the state because of cracks or holes in pipelines, so having the technology to help councils find and repair these leaks is a simple but effective tool in the fight to tackle water loss."

Residents may notice inspectors working in the area as they assess the water supply network. There will be no interruptions to water supply during this work.
