Funding to enhance dairy sustainability

Jo Palmer, Minister for Primary Industries and Water

A new two-year project will help Tasmania's dairy farmers become more sustainable and give them tools to adapt to changing climate conditions.

The Rockliff Liberal Government is investing $243,000 in the DairyTas-led project to support the dairy industry as it continues to evolve with the every-changing environment.

Primary Industries and Water Minister Jo Palmer congratulated DairyTas for its ongoing work to support this $490 million industry now and into the future.

"As part of the project, DairyTas will support farmers to consider the use and management of dairy effluent, options to reduce fertiliser and methane emissions, and understand their greenhouse gas emissions," Minister Palmer said.

"The project also contributes to the Dairy Australia National Soils Nutrients and Irrigation Programs that support reducing greenhouse gas emissions on farm, as well as the Climate Ready Agriculture priority in the Tasmanian Government's Competitiveness of Tasmania's Agriculture to 2050 White Paper.

"This initiative will support the dairy industry to continue to be sustainable, contribute to Tasmania's economy and help reach our Government's emissions reduction target for Tasmania of net zero emissions, or lower, from 2030.

"Our Government is supporting agricultural producers to reduce their emissions, adapt to, and be prepared for the impacts of climate change and leverage opportunities for growth.

Tasmania's dairy industry makes up 10.8 per cent of the country's total milk volume.
