- Cook Labor Government fostering a vibrant and creative economy
The Indian Ocean Craft Triennial (IOTA), a festival of contemporary craft in Western Australia, will run from September to December next year with $500,000 in Cook Labor Government support.
The funding will support the delivery of the program, including connecting Western Australia with the Indian Ocean Region through a major international exhibition, artist exchanges, an international conference, a State-wide community festival, and a range of education and public programs that bring artists and communities together.
The program will showcase contemporary craft from across the Indian Ocean region, with residencies, exchanges and public programs creating opportunities to share skills, cultural knowledge and stories.
Of the total funding, $288,620 is from Lotterywest which will support the festival delivery, youth workshops, regional travel and community opening events, alongside promotion of more than 70 exhibitions and workshops State-wide.
As stated by Creative Industries Minister Simone McGurk:
"Contemporary craft brings together creativity, cultural knowledge and skills often passed between generations. Indian Ocean Craft Triennial provides a platform for artists to share that work and for audiences to discover the stories behind it.
"This two-year funding commitment from the Cook Labor Government will support artists and build the partnerships needed to deliver a program that reaches across Western Australia.
"Through exhibitions and community workshops more Western Australians will have the opportunity to engage with contemporary craft, while showcasing our artists alongside their peers from across the Indian Ocean region."
