Council has welcomed the recent announcement from the Federal Government that the City of Whittlesea has received funding for three road projects as part of the Black Spot Program's 2019-20 funding round.
The funding of $525,000 will be used on Yan Yean Road to install traffic lights at the intersection of Hazel Glen Drive and alter the Mitchell's Run intersection to left in/left out only.
Mayor Lawrie Cox said more than 18,000 cars travel down this section of Yan Yean Road each day.
"There have been multiple crashes at these intersections including nine casualty crashes resulting in 13 people being injured, three of them requiring hospitalisation, all of which related to unsafe right-hand turns," Cr Cox said.
"It was always intended that right turns would be restricted at Mitchells Run once the surrounding estates were fully developed and there were more options for drivers.
"Drivers will still be able to use options such as the Hazel Glen Drive and Cookes Road intersections, or the Painted Hills Road extension to Bridge Inn Road which is now open."
In Bundoora $75,000 will be spent at the intersection of McLeans Road and Nathan Court to install solar powered flashing lights at the existing pedestrian crossing.
"The safety of people who live in and travel through the City of Whittlesea is incredibly important to us. We are very pleased to receive this funding so that we can improve road safety, travel times and reduce crashes and injuries to our residents," Cr Cox said.
The intersections are due to be upgraded in early 2020.
