Funds sought for all abilities exercise station

Council has applied for Federal Government funding to assist with the installation of an all abilities park exercise station on the Cairns Esplanade.

An application for $271,000 has been made to the Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) Economic and Community Participation Program, for the construction of the gym and for accessibility upgrades to surrounding infrastructure.

The proposed gym is to be located within the activity precinct on the Esplanade and will complement existing facilities such as the skate park, bouldering wall and volleyball courts.

The location is also close to the Cairns Hospital and the Spinal Life Healthy Living Centre in North Cairns, which would make the gym convenient and accessible for those in rehabilitation or utilising the Spinal Life accommodation facilities.

Should the grant application be successful, Council will contribute $31,000 of additional funding to complete the project.

This resolution is to be ratified at the next Ordinary Meeting of Council, to be held on 24 February 2021.
