Futsalroos Squad Set for 2026 AFC Asian Cup

Futsalroos Head Coach Miles Downie has named a strong 14-player squad to represent Australia at the AFC Futsal Asian Cup Indonesia 2026™, to be contested from Tuesday, 27 January to Saturday, 7 February 2026.

Australia qualified for the continental showpiece following an impressive AFC Futsal Asian Cup Qualifiers campaign in Kuwait, recording victories over Mongolia (8-1) and India (10-1), before drawing 2-2 with hosts Kuwait to secure progression. The Futsalroos have since been drawn into Group C alongside Japan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan.

The squad features a blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent, with 10 players retained from Australia's most recent AFC Futsal Asian Cup appearance in 2024, ensuring continuity and valuable tournament experience within the group.

As part of their preparations, the Futsalroos recently faced tournament hosts Indonesia in an international friendly at Indonesia Arena, going down 3-1. While the result did not fall Australia's way, the fixture provided valuable exposure to local conditions and a strong reference point ahead of the tournament.

The 2026 edition will mark Australia's eighth appearance at the AFC Futsal Asian Cup, following a long-awaited return to the continental stage in 2024 after an eight-year absence. The Futsalroos will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since 2016, with their best finish coming in 2012, when Australia claimed fourth place.

Quotes Attributable to Futsalroos Head Coach, Miles Downie:

"We've selected a balanced squad and, importantly, a group that understands what it takes to compete at this level.

"This group has shown they can score goals, adapt to challenges and fight until the final whistle. The experience we've built over the past two years, including our recent match in Indonesia, puts us in a strong position to take another step forward.

"There's no hiding the challenge of the group we've been drawn into, but that's exactly where this group wants to test itself. Our focus is on being competitive from the first match and giving ourselves every opportunity to progress."

Australia will open its campaign against Japan at 7.00pm AEDT (3.00pm local) on Wednesday, 28 January, before facing Uzbekistan at 7.00pm AEDT (3.00pm local) on Friday, 30 January and Tajikistan at 7.00pm AEDT (3.00pm local) on Sunday, 1 February 2026.

As the AFC Futsal Asian Cup is held every two years, the 2026 edition does not serve as qualification for the FIFA Futsal World Cup, which is next held in 2028.
