Future of Savage River Secured

The Tasmanian Government has taken an important step towards securing the long-term future of the Savage River mine, with the Grange Resources (Tasmania) Pty Ltd (Alternative Application Period) Bill 2026 passing the House of Assembly last night.

Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Felix Ellis, said certainty for the hundreds of workers at the mine was now one step closer.

"Grange has proposed an investment of up to $1.2 billion to transition its open cut operation to an underground block cave mining operation," Minister Ellis said.

"This Bill has been drafted to enable Grange to apply for an early renewal of its mining leases, which will provide the certainty of their mining lease tenure that lenders to a project of this scale require.

"This certainty will allow Grange to come to a final investment decision on its development plans.

"Our Government is delivering for Tasmania by backing a project that will reduce operating costs, lower its carbon footprint, and extend the life of the mine."

The Bill now proceeds to the Legislative Council for further consideration.
