The Finocchiaro CLP Government's year of action, certainty and security continues with the completion of the $11.7 million Borroloola Sports and Cyclone Shelter delivering a critical dual-purpose facility for the community.
The multi-use centre strengthens community resilience and provides year-round access to modern indoor sporting and community event infrastructure.
Constructed to Importance Level 4 standards, the shelter can safely accommodate up to 600 people during emergencies, significantly enhancing Borroloola's preparedness for extreme weather events.
Jointly funded by the Northern Territory Government and the McArthur River Mine Community Benefits Trust (MRMCBT), the project saw $9.8 million delivered through a grant to the Roper Gulf Regional Council, with MRMCBT contributing a further $1.9 million.
Roper Gulf Regional Council, as the facility owner, will now activate the shelter for a wide range of local uses including sports competitions, markets, fundraisers and community gatherings.
Minister for Logistics and Infrastructure, Bill Yan, said the project is an example of the CLP Government delivering infrastructure that matters.
"This project reflects our Government's commitment to delivering certainty and security for the people of Borroloola.
"This facility not only provides a vital shelter in times of need, but it's also a community hub that supports sport, culture and social connection all year round," said Mr Yan.
Minister for People, Sport and Culture, Jinson Charls, said the new shelter is a great outcome for both emergency preparedness and community life.
"Territorians deserve safe places to come together, whether that's to shelter from a cyclone or to shoot hoops on a weeknight.
"This project delivers on both fronts and is a fantastic example of the CLP Government backing regional communities with real investment and action," said Mr Charls.
The Borroloola Sports and Cyclone Shelter is part of a wider Northern Territory Government approach to deliver dual-purpose facilities in remote regions ensuring every dollar invested delivers maximum long-term benefit to local communities.
