Key Facts:

  • Solar industry faces growing challenge of managing end-of-life photovoltaic systems globally
  • GBP has joined Japanese Solar Panel Reuse & Recycling Association to promote best practices
  • Key recycling challenges include limited infrastructure, material quality issues and disposal risks
  • Company will share expertise from operations including Kita-Ibaraki factory experience
  • Initiative aims to develop industry-wide recycling solutions and support sustainable energy systems

As solar energy deployment accelerates worldwide, the renewable energy sector faces a growing challenge: managing the first wave of end-of-life photovoltaic (PV) systems. Responsible recycling and reuse of retired panels are essential to maintaining sustainable solar infrastructure globally.

To address this, GBP has joined the Solar Panel Reuse & Recycling Association of Japan, an industry organization promoting best practices for the collection, processing, and reuse of decommissioned solar panels.

Key challenges in solar panel recycling include:

· Limited recycling infrastructure and processing capacity worldwide
· Variability in recovered material quality, which can hinder effective reuse
· Risks of improper disposal or storage of decommissioned panels

Through its membership, GBP will share operational expertise and technical know-how gained through its O&M and asset renewal operations, including experience from its Kita-Ibaraki factory, to support the development of practical, industry-wide recycling solutions.

"Responsible recycling not only extends the productive life of solar assets but also helps recover valuable materials and supports sustainable energy systems worldwide," said Yohei Tutsukawa, President of GBP. "Our efforts in Japan provide a model that can be applied globally, contributing to the growth and resilience of the renewable energy sector."
