Geelong Takes Next Step Towards World-class Film Studio

The strategy will provide a clear roadmap for establishing and scaling a professional film and screen-production ecosystem in Geelong, including assessing the feasibility of a dedicated movie studio, and is expected to be delivered in the coming months.

Presenting an opportunity for Geelong to complement Melbourne's Docklands Studios, the strategy will consider market demand from national and international producers, infrastructure and facility needs, workforce capacity, training pathways and future skills requirements.

The findings will guide future investment decisions, supporting advocacy to state and federal governments.

There is already strong local appeal and interest from the film industry, with Geelong having a history of attracting major screen productions, even without a dedicated studio.

Major local and international productions shot in Geelong include Nitram (2021), Foe (2023), Untitled John Tuggle Project (2025), Inside (2024), Force of Nature (2024), The Whistleblower (2019), The Dressmaker (2015), Surviving Summer (2024), Knowing (2009), and Ghost Rider (2007).

The project is a collaboration between Pelligra, the City of Greater Geelong, VicScreen, and Deakin University.

Greater Geelong Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM:

Geelong is in a unique position to become a significant new hub for screen production in Victoria.

By taking this next step, we'll receive the evidence, insight and direction needed to understand what it will take to grow a film industry here.

With our growing ties to India and a clear synergy with India's rapidly expanding screen sector, we believe there is strong potential for future collaboration and investment.

Pelligra chairman Ross Pelligra:

Pelligra see enormous potential in Geelong to host a world class Film Manufacturing Precinct and Studio Complex.

Working with Urbis and City of Greater Geelong to refine our investment approach will ensure the long-term viability for Australia's next major Screen-Production destination.

Deakin University Associate Head of School, International and Partnerships Dr Russell Kennedy:

A thriving screen industry means new jobs, new training pathways and new innovation opportunities for our region.

Deakin is proud to contribute expertise in screen education, creative technology and digital skills to support this vision.
