Geelong's Dazzling Tree And Carols Kick Off Christmas

A picture-perfect pairing of music and lights made for a joyous opening of the Christmas in Geelong program on Saturday night.

It's estimated around 20,000 people visited the waterfront on Saturday evening, enjoying the Carols by the Bay and the lighting of the Floating Christmas Tree.

After being rain-affected last year, the two events came together in the same Steampacket precinct for the first time to welcome the festive season.

The event saw thousands of people activate the Waterfront precinct, supporting surrounding businesses, including restaurants and hotels.

It kickstarts this year's extensive Christmas in Geelong program, giving people even more reasons to visit central Geelong and injecting a projected additional $25 million into the local economy.

Early feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with some attendees describing this year's event as the best yet.

While there was a shower or two, Carols host Denis Walter OAM and performers including the Oz Boyz, Angie Hilton, Team Dream and Santa put on a spectacular show.

In its 12th year, the Floating Christmas Tree was officially illuminated by Flick the Switch competition winner Charlotte Rockafeller, 6, of Manifold Heights.

It's always a highlight of the calendar for me, the performers and our wonderful community. Thank you to everyone who came out, sang along and embraced the festive spirit. I wish a safe and happy Christmas to all.

The Christmas in Geelong program continues throughout November, December and January, with a range of innovations this year, including street performers, City Hall projections, art installations, new decorations and community events.

Mayor Stretch Kontelj OAM

I'm proud to declare Geelong the Christmas capital of Australia after the huge success of Saturday night. It was great to see so many people supporting hospitality venues on the waterfront despite the rain, and the popularity shows how much people love the combination of carols and the lighting of our famous tree. Our Christmas in Geelong program has something for everyone.

The interactive Floating Christmas Tree will play six-minute shows every 15 minutes from 8.30pm-midnight each night until Wednesday 7 January. To personalise the production from your phone, such as changing the colours, visit geelongchristmastree.com.au
