Gender Equality takes centre state at University of Canberra

The University of Canberra (UC) believes gender equality in the workplace is an issue that matters, and equal pay is firmly entrenched in the fabric of its daily operations.

The University's recent citation as an Employer of Choice for Gender Equality awarded by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA) for the twelfth consecutive year supports the University's commitment to becoming a national sector leader in equality, diversity, inclusion and access.

As one of 140 organisations nationwide to be named a 2018-19 Employer of Choice for Gender Equality, UC is amongst Australia's foremost commercial, professional and educational organisations leading the charge in promoting an active commitment to gender equality in Australian workplaces through initiatives including a generous paid parental leave scheme for the primary care-giver, increased paid partner leave and flexible working arrangements.

The recent announcement of Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Deep Saini as a Pay Equity Ambassador under the WGEA is further evidence of the University's commitment to gender equity.

"The University has a long history of proactively supporting gender equality," said Professor Saini.

"People are attracted to the University of Canberra because of our distinctive culture, values and focus on putting our people first. Our staff, students and alumni are our greatest assets and this citation is a victory for us all."

To ensure continued improvement and commitment to gender equality, the University's Chief Executive, People & Diversity will be undertaking further analysis of gender pay equity.

The University of Canberra's 50/50 by 2030 Foundation under the leadership of Virginia Hausegger AM aims to empower gender equality in the region. The Foundation's vision is for men and women to be equally represented in public leadership roles throughout Australia and across the region.

"Embracing workplace gender equality means different things for different organisations," said WGEA Director Libby Lyons. "Every employer committed to gender equality embarks upon their own unique journey towards achieving equal participation by women and men in their workplace. The WGEA Employer of Choice for Gender Equality citation provides a rigorous and sophisticated roadmap to guide employers along the path,"

In addition to being an Employer of Choice for Gender Equality, the University is a White Ribbon Accredited Workplace and a Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace.
