Generational Change: Uibo to Fight for Fair Deal for Territory Kids

Minister for Education, Selena Uibo, will today attend the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) Education Council in Adelaide, where fighting for Territory kids is at the top of her agenda.

The meeting of all Australian State, Territory and Federal ministers with responsibility for education is the first Ms Uibo will attend since being appointed NT Education Minister in June.

It will also be the first for new Federal Education Minister Dan Tehan, who was appointed to the role last month.

NAPLAN 2018 results and reporting are on the agenda, as is national school reform, and a national review of teacher registration.

After the national spotlight on bullying earlier this year, the council will also continue its consideration into a collaborative approach to tackling both bullying and cyber-bullying.

As stated by Minister for Education, Selena Uibo.

We know the Territory has higher levels of disadvantage and higher costs for service delivery, especially in our remote schools and I will be working to ensure Mr Tehan is aware of our unique context.

The national school funding model proposed by his predecessor, Simon Birmingham, will rip $150 million from NT government schools over the next decade.

This would be a further blow to education in the Territory, after the previous CLP Government slashed $135 million from the education budget and sacked teachers and frontline staff.

The Territory Labor Government is re-investing in our children and our teachers with this years record, $1.14 billion in education budget.

We will always invest in education because giving every child the best start in life is not just the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do, for the Territorys future.
