Kapil Yadav will use the grant to conduct fire management research in the Uttarakhand Himalayas, India.
The National Geographical Society has awarded Yadav Kapil a $13,000 grant for his project 'Contested Forest Fire Management in the Uttarakhand Himalaya'.
The grant will fund Yadav's research that focuses on changing local forest fire management practices. The research aims to better understand:
- who makes fire management decisions and on what basis
- how fires are considered to benefit different groups
- whether there are any trade-offs for other groups.
The project is interdisciplinary and will draw on fire ecology, forestry, remote sensing and social sciences.

The level one grant is for one-year long projects conducted by people who are working to establish themselves in their field and are interested in joining the National Geographic Explorer community.
