Georges River Council will mark National Reconciliation Week and National Sorry Day from 23 May to 3 June. It is a time to reflect, learn, and act.
This year's National Reconciliation Week theme is "All In." It calls on all Australians to commit to reconciliation every day. The theme encourages shared responsibility and real action.
Council is hosting a range of events and initiatives. These activities aim to build understanding and respect for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and cultures.
To recognise National Sorry Day, Council is partnering with Kurranulla Aboriginal Corporation for its annual National Sorry Day event. It will be held at Oatley Park Foreshore on Sunday 24 May. There will be an opportunity to Walk on Country with Uncle Dean Kelly and participate in yarning circles with Aunty Barb Simms and Aunty Calita Murray.
In solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the Fiestaville Multicultural Choir will also perform at the event.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "This is an important time for our community."
"Council is proud to support events that bring our community together and honour Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices.
"Reconciliation is everyone's business. This year's theme, 'All In', reminds us to show up, listen, and act. I encourage the community to participate in our upcoming Reconciliation Week events."
Other activities to be held during the week include:
- A Bush Tucker session at Gungah Bay Reserve. It will be led by Koori Kinnections after a Bushcare planting event.
- A Reconciliation-themed craft station at Hurstville Museum & Gallery.
