Georges River Council is proud to recognise and celebrate Pride Month this June. It joins communities across Sydney in celebrating the theme, Connected in Colour.
In June, Council will host various inclusive events, programs, and learning opportunities. They aim to create connection, understanding, and social cohesion in the Georges River area.
The activities include:
-
ACON Sector Training: Introduction to LGBTQIA+ Communities and Inclusive Customer Service
-
Pride Creature Lab
-
VOIIID Collective Performance at Uncontained Arts Festival
Council's commitment to inclusion is upheld by its Social Justice Charter. This reinforces the organisation's dedication to ending discrimination and creating a safe and welcoming environment.
As part of this commitment, the LGBTQIA+ community is a priority group within the Charter, alongside other communities. This includes:
-
Culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) residents.
-
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
-
Young people.
-
Older adults.
-
People living with disability.
Council's Pride Month program highlights the importance of education, awareness and engagement. Initiatives are designed to build understanding of LGBTQIA+ experiences and support inclusive practices. Council aims to build understanding, encourage allyship and strengthen connections within the community through the program.
Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "Pride Month is a powerful reminder of the role communities play in creating a welcoming and inclusive society.
"It's about coming together in respect and solidarity. Our diversity is what makes our community stronger.
"The theme Connected in Colour reflects the importance of social cohesion. When people feel safe, valued and included, our entire community thrives."
