Georges River Honors 103-Year-Old Community Champion

Georges River Council

Georges River Council extends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of Margaret Callister, a long-standing Bexley resident who passed away on 22 April 2025 at the age of 103.

Ms Callister was a beloved member of the local community, affectionately referring to herself as "Bexley Callister". Council recently featured Margaret as a community champion in the Autumn edition of the Community Magazine, where her remarkable life and contributions were celebrated.

Born in Ballarat and a Bexley resident since 1934, Margaret led an extraordinary life filled with service, travel, and strong community connection. She worked at the Commonwealth Bank in Bexley, later continuing her career in Sydney, Tasmania, London, and New Zealand. Known for her community spirit, she remained actively engaged with the Baptist Church, the Liberal Party, and the St George Historical Society.

Margaret also had a unique connection to one of Australia's most iconic foods –Vegemite. Her uncle, Cyril Callister, was the inventor of the famous spread. Her story is featured in the book Vegemite: The True Story of the Man Who Invented an Australian Icon, written by her cousin, Jamie Callister. Margaret remained proud of this unique family legacy throughout her life.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said, "Margaret was a much-loved and respected member of our community, and we were honoured to share her story in our Community Magazine earlier this year."

"Her warmth, wisdom and generosity of spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew her."

"She stayed close to her extended family and shared her life experiences with honesty and humour, always encouraging future generations."

"Margaret will be deeply missed by our community, and I extend my heartfelt condolences to her friends and family."
