A work-place traineeship initiative, launched last year following challenges due to COVID, is again being offered to Year 12 school leavers.

GetSet Gap Year 2022 enables school leavers to take advantage of opportunities in the NT Public Service and not-for-profit organisations so they can train here in the Northern Territory.

Up to 30 students from the 2021 Year 12 cohort will be offered an 11-month AO1 contract, where they can access up to three 15-week rotations across different NTG agencies including the option of one rotation with a not-for-profit organisation.

The program enables students to build a portfolio of evidence of skill development and experience to assist in their search for career or training options beyond their gap year.

Participants receive ongoing mentorship and support throughout their placements, as well as on-the-job training and upskilling in government systems, along with performing duties such as:

project assistance and contribution;administrative support;providing advice to stakeholders;drafting basic reports;undertaking research; andgeneral and routine processing.

Further, participants receive ongoing support through a buddy system, regular check-ins from a central coordinator and contextualised training relevant to NTG and future employment.

A new feature of the 2022 program is an option for school leavers from remote areas to participate, with 15 assistant teacher traineeships available for Aboriginal students from select schools.

There are currently 22 Get SET participants, who are due to complete the 2021 program in December.
