The City of Gold Coast's lifeguards have wrapped up a record summer holiday season, keeping approximately 4.1 million beach users safe and carrying out 1606 rescues over a two-month period.
"Our City lifeguards have once again dedicated their summer to ensuring the safety of millions of people visiting our popular beaches and pools," said Acting Mayor Mark Hammel.
"With a record 4.1 million beach users descending on the beach between Rainbow Bay and Paradise Point in December and January, they performed 1606 rescues, 1315 medical treatments, and 81,858 public interactions.
"Over the Christmas and New Year period alone there were 1.22 million beach users, 256 rescues performed, 278 medical treatments delivered, and 21,700 public interactions.
"Gold Coast lifeguards demonstrated their expertise and professionalism often putting themselves at risk to save others experiencing trouble in the water.
"They perform these heroic actions on a daily basis and we thank them for their tireless work and commitment to keeping our beaches safe during the busiest time of year on the Gold Coast."
There were more than 200 lifeguards patrolling daily across 42 patrolled beaches and pools showing their strong commitment to the safety of beachgoers through peak season.
The City has a dedicated workforce of around 325 lifeguards.
The City's Lifeguard Services operate 365 days a year with permanent and seasonal lifeguards patrolling over 70 kilometres of coastline.
As the summer season wraps up residents and visitors are reminded to always swim between the red and yellow flags and heed the advice of lifeguards.
