Gold Coast man charged over $1 million Ice importation

A 26-year-old Gold Coast man has been charged with drug importation, following a joint operation between Tasmania Police and the Australian Federal Police (AFP).

Members from the Tasmania Police Crime and Intelligence Command were in Queensland this week to facilitate the man's arrest, after he allegedly imported 1kg of methylamphetamine ("Ice") to Queensland from overseas, in April this year.

The drugs, which have a street value of $1 million, were intercepted by authorities in New South Wales and replaced with a replica consignment which was located by AFP investigators at a Gold Coast address. The man relocated from Tasmania to Queensland late last year, and Tasmania Police's Serious Organised Crime Unit played a crucial role in the seizure.

The man has been charged with importing a border-controlled drug and other drug offences and will appear in Southport Magistrates Court on 24 August 2022.

Detective Senior Sergeant Deearna Rowe stated "Tasmania Police will continue to work closely with partner agencies to target organised crime groups and detect and disrupt illicit drug activity in Australia".
