The City has launched a new grants and funding program for businesses to help bolster nature-based tourism on the Gold Coast.

Mayor Tom Tate will officially announce the beginning of the grants program at an industry event at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on Wednesday 7 May, with hundreds of industry professionals in attendance.

Applications for these grants will open on 8 May 2025, providing a prime opportunity for existing and new businesses to receive support for developing and expanding their nature-based tourism activities and products.

The City is looking for projects that combine environmental preservation with enhancing visitor experiences as well as providing economic growth for the city.

"The Gold Coast is one of the most ecologically diverse cities in Australia and our new nature-based tourism program is part of the City's ongoing commitment to preserve our rich natural heritage," Mayor Tate said.

"We want businesses to help us protect and celebrate our 'green behind the gold' to enhance tourism while showcasing our unique natural environment.

"Eligible businesses are encouraged to apply for funding and make the most of the benefits that will come with the growing global demand for nature-based tourism in Australia."

The program aims to meet the growing demand of global travellers to connect with nature and engage in environmentally and culturally responsible activities.

"Research has found that 20 per cent of travellers seek travel experiences where the natural environment is front and centre," Mayor Tate added.

"This is a great opportunity for businesses in the nature space to leverage off the popularity of nature-based tourism for their own benefit as well as for the benefit of our city's economy and our environment.

"Let's work together to find new ways for locals and visitors to explore our natural city with sustainability and conservation in mind."

Ecotourism Australia CEO Elissa Keenan said the growing global demand for nature-based tourism presented a unique opportunity for the Gold Coast to diversify its tourism offering by showcasing its extraordinary natural landscapes.

"By investing in experiences that celebrate both your unique environment and cultural heritage, the Gold Coast is ensuring tourism contributes to the protection of our ecosystems and celebrates community values.

"Sustainable tourism is the foundation for a resilient, future-focused tourism industry."

Nature-based tourism opportunities on the Gold Coast could include (but are not limited to):

  • adventure and recreation activities like kayaking and eco-friendly outdoor adventures
  • educational experiences like guided nature walks and cultural tours, including First Nations-led experiences
  • sustainable-accommodation like eco-lodges near high-value natural areas
  • local dining experiences featuring native or farm-to-plate ingredients
